Cassini Mission to Saturn!

This is an artists concept of Cassini during the Saturn Orbit Insertion (SOI) maneuver, just after the main engine has begun firing.

Launch date: Oct. 15, 1997

The Cassini orbiter is designed to tour Saturn and its icy moons. Cassini flew by Jupiter in December of 2000 after a lengthy tour of the inner solar system, including two Venus flybys and an Earth flyby. The spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Saturn on July 1, 2004, after flying by Saturn's distant moon, Phoebe. Shortly after entering orbit, the Huygens probe (designed by the European Space Agency) will separate from the Cassini orbiter and begin its entry into the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Cassini is then expected to make at least 30 loose elliptical orbits of the planet, each optimized for a different set of observations. The spacecraft is named after G.D. Cassini who discovered 4 of Saturn's moons.
