Pioneer 11 Mission to Saturn!

Pioneer 11

Launch date: April 5, 1973

Pioneer 11 was the second spacecraft to explore the outer solar system (the first being Pioneer 10). Pioneer 11 was the first spacecraft to visit the ringed world of Saturn. The spacecraft flew by the planet on September 1, 1979, passing within 21,000 kilometers (13,000 miles) of Saturn's cloud tops. During the flyby, Pioneer 11 studied the planet's atmosphere and magnetic field and took pictures of Saturn and its moons. Once past Saturn, Pioneer 11 continued on, traveling out of our solar system until its nuclear power supply was unable to provide enough energy to run its instruments. The spacecraft was shut down on September 30, 1995 - over 22 years after its mission began. Pioneer 11 will pass near the star Lambda Aquila in almost four million years.
