Saturn Moon: Pan!

This is the highest resolution image of Pan from the Voyager data. This image shows it in the Encke Gap of the A-ring. Pan is shown enlarged and enhanced in the inset box.

Pan is the innermost satellite of Saturn and was discovered by Mark R. Showalter in 1990 using Voyager images. It is so close to Saturn that it actually orbits inside the Encke Gap of the A-ring. It is one of the shepherd satellites and so keeps the Encke Gap open.
